Election address:

Hi, my name is Jacob Webb, aged 27, and am standing to be re-elected to the Unlock Democracy Council. I have enjoyed being part of the Council over the last two years, supporting organizational development, offering support to staff where I can, and learning a great deal.

If re-elected, these would be my priorities:

Discussing Democracy with Communities: I would utilize my networks to strengthen Unlock Democracy’s engagement with local communities. During my 2020-22 term as a Council member, I represented UD at the Malvern Festival of Ideas, and supported the organization of a joint ‘Turning the Tide’ event on rejuvenating local democracy in the London borough of Hillingdon with leading local Councilors. If elected, I would seek to take this work further, encouraging more UD members to discuss democracy at community events.

Fairer Financing: Currently Unlock Democracy receives part of its income from profits made from property development. A recent report from the former chair of UD, Rachel Collison has shown that Ethical investments are not only the moral way forward for UD, but also the financially sensible one. I will support moves towards a more ethical funding arrangement for our organization.

Diversity: The Government’s Elections Bill to curtail our Democracy will hit young people disproportionately making it harder for us to challenge the many injustices in our society. I would be a voice on Council to make sure the voices of young people are heard.
